I've had my Subaru Outback 2.5 for about a week now. Quite a good car, and its CVT isn't even that bad. That said, the only CVT experience I have is from a Prius. Also, can I just say that this has the most accessible oil filter I have ever seen. Ever.
*Not my actual car, because it's 3 degrees out and I don't want to freeze my fingers off.

I've never understood why more companies don't provide full enclosures for their batteries like my Mazda3 does. I had so many issues with crap building up on the nodes in my Matrix, and that was with 3 totally different batteries. The only similarity between those batteries was the salt-tastic environment during the winter.

I've never thought of that. It makes sense to protect it.

After having bottom access oil filters the majority of my driving life, it was an amazingly pleasant surprise to find my 2010 tdi had a top-load oil filter. Makes oil changes a snap, especially if you use one of the oil extractor devices. Practically eliminates the need to crawl under the car.

BMW puts them up there too.

Yep, I don't understand why this isn't where everyone puts it. My BRZ has the easiest oil change ever.

My trucks is placed such that when you remove it, you dump a cup of oil on the front axle... I want this now.

I haven't done an oil change in my Crosstrek yet (dealer supplied maintenance through warranty period), but I thought it kind of looked like a PITA, like oil would drip everywhere when you removed the filter. Maybe not.
I know years ago I had an oil cooler on my S-10 pickup, and that one was about as simple as you could get for an oil change. I could crawl under the truck without a lift. That was maybe a ten minute job (or however long it took the oil to drain out completely).

I noticed that on my wife's Legacy, very convenient!

Interesting. The other weekend, for the very first time, I had to change my battery. I was surprised by the plastic box thing around it, and had no idea why it was there. Now it makes sense.

My Civic isn't much different - it dribbles down the back of the block onto an exhaust cover, so I get to smell the joyous smell of burning oil for the next week if I don't clean it properly.

Is there any logical reason for not having this? I'm constantly amazed at manufacturers and their creative ways of making an oil change some form of torture. I really think there should be a checklist that every manufacturer has to go through before releasing a car. Included on the checklist should be:
Is the oil filter easy to change?
If they can't check that box, the car doesn't go out of the factory. (Unless it's an electric car, but I digress).

Try a 911 993 Turbo:
-Remove intake ducting from under car
-Drain oil ( drain plug #1)
-Remove right hand intake pipe
-Remove sway bar
-Remove filter #1 (proceed to get oil all over your hand and filter socket)
-Replace filter #1
-Replace drain plug #1
-Replace ducting, sway bar etc
-Remove right hand guard liner
-Remove drain plug #2 cover
-Drain oil from plug #2
-Remove filter #2
-Replace filter #2
-Replace drain plug #2
-Replace oil.
A bit more complex unfortunately.

my old Camry also had a pretty easy to reach oil filter.
much easier than reaching up around the steering rack, and between the block, and fire wall to get to the filter in my Hondas.
